4 ways to prevent clogged gutters

You might know about the problems caused by clogged gutters, but how can you prevent them? Below are our favorite four ways to prevent clogged gutters.

Regular gutter cleanings

The most commonly recommended way to prevent clogs is with regular gutter cleanings. It is highly recommended that you hire a professional gutter cleaning service rather than doing it yourself, for safety reasons. Gutters need to be cleaned a minimum of twice a year, but if your house is near trees or you have other factors that can lead to clogged gutters, you will need additional cleanings.

Gutter guards

Gutter guards are a great way to prevent clogged gutters and drastically cut down on the number of gutter cleaning you need. Gutter guards save you time and money by preventing clogs and reducing the number of gutter cleanings you’ll need.

Gutter guards work by preventing leaves and other debris from going into your gutter, but still allowing water in.

Inspect downspouts

If your downspout gets clogged it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the gutters get clogged too. Inspecting the downspouts monthly and after every large windstorm can help prevent clogged gutters.

Trim trees

Trimming trees so that they do not overhang your roof is a great way to reduce the number of leaves that fall into your gutters, stopping clogs before they happen.

When leaves get trapped in your gutter system, they start to decay into a black or brown muck, and can contribute to the growth of weeds and other problems in your gutter.
